Capital Structure
As of March 31, 2010, the company held cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $598.3 million versus $667.8 million as of December 31, 2009. Management expects to generate a steady positive operating cash flow by the end of 2010, as well as a positive non-GAAP operating income for 2011 and a GAAP operating profit by the end of 2011.
For FY10, the management continues to expect capital expenditure (net of reimbursements from Eli Lilly) of less than the $98 million recorded in 2009, which will support Exenatide life cycle management. Furthermore, management intends to repay the current $86 million in outstanding debt.

Governance Social Responsibility and Employee Relations
Though the company generates considerable gross profits from the sale of Byetta and Symlin, it is in a cash-burn mode due to its significant R&D and SG&A investments.
DPP-IV inhibitors may offer many of the benefits of Byetta in pill form. Other GLP-1 analogs in development offer a more convenient dosing regimen and represent a significant competitive threat.
The timely approval of Exenatide LAR remains a concern based on both pancreatitis and thyroid cancer risk.
